چکیده

Gamification is the application of game mechanics, such as leader boards, badges or achievement points, in non-gaming environments with the aim to increase user engagement, data quality or cost effectiveness. A core aspect of gamification solutions is to infuse intrinsic motivations to participate by leveraging people’s natural desires for achievement and competition. While gamification, on the one hand, is emerging as the next big thing in industry, e.g., an effective way to generate business, on the other hand, it is also becoming a major research area. However, its adoption in Information Retrieval (IR) is still in its infancy, despite the wide ranging IR tasks that may benefit from gamification techniques. These include the manual annotation of documents for IR evaluation, the participation in user studies to study interactive IR challenges, or the shift from single-user search to social search, just to mention a few. This context provided the motivation to organise the GamifIR’14 workshop at ECIR.

Second International Workshop on Gamification for Information Retrieval (GamifIR'15)

Gamification is a popular methodology describing the trend of applying game design principles and elements, such as feedback loops, points, badges or leader boards in non-gaming environments. Gamification can have several different objectives. Besides just increasing the fun factor, these could be, for example, to achieve more accurate work, better retention rates and more cost effective soluti...

IR Game: How well do you Know Information Retrieval Papers?

In this paper we demonstrate how a gamification approach increases the attractiveness of an assessment exercise in the context of expertise profiling. We present an online game, in two difficulty modes, where users have to guess the authors of publications. We analyze the collected data along different dimensions and identify four types of gaming personalities based on behavioral patterns. Furt...

Gamification for WebSAIL

Recent studies reveal that most web search engine users lack appropriate strategies for finding relevant results e ciently and e↵ectively. They eventually miss out on important information, need significantly more time for searching than high search literate users, and overestimate their skills in the domain of web search. In this paper, we introduce the ongoing WebSAIL project (Web Search lite...

Learning Gamification Design - An Usability First Approach for the Enterprise Infoboard Experiment

Gamification or gameful design attempts to raise participation through the application of game design patterns and principles in nongame environments. It has successfully been applied but in many cases gamification fails due to di↵erent kind of design phase pitfalls. Several game and gamification design taxonomies and guides exists. But it is hard to select the right one for a specific applicat...
